Chapter Eleven

Six liked to tease me—that much I already knew—but I hadn’t expected to see the amusement and pure joy in his gaze while he watched Jordan dress and apply makeup to her face and mine. He had requested a look similar to the one she had done before, the night of the party. My lips were painted deep brown, and she’d smoked eyeshadow around my eyes to match. When I tried to make my face look like this, I usually failed, but Jordan was more talented in bringing out what was already there rather than attempting to create something new.

Though it was black like mine, her lace dress was shorter, flaring out at the waist. Her cleavage was somewhat concealed by the ribbed bodice, and the sleeves hung off her shoulders. Six had also conjured shoes from the seemingly-magic hotel closet—hers were platform Mary Janes and mine were slender heels. At my raised eyebrow, he brought a finger to his lips with a shrug.

We rode the elevator in silence, Six on one side, me in the middle, and Jordan next to me. She gripped my hand while he looped my arm through his. Together, we walked through the lobby and toward the exit.

I’d asked several times where we were going, but he refused to tell me. My growing frustration only seemed to entertain him more.

Outside, the pillars to the main entrance held up an awning lit with blue and purple neon bulbs. Parked in the wide, circular driveway was a car that I thought was a hearse until I realized the length.

“Come along, ladies,” Six cooed, overly confident—which wasn’t hard when he knew all the plans and we didn’t. “Our vehicle is waiting.”

“A fucking limo?” I heard Jordan say under her breath. The only indication that Six had heard her was his slight smile as he led us forward. Louder, she added, “Are we going to prom?”

Six opened the door himself, releasing me so he could direct us inside. “Better.”

I let Jordan go ahead of me, and she climbed in without taking her eyes off Six. I waited for him to give me more information before I followed, but he only offered a hand to help me.

“My love,” he said with a nod.

“Six,” I replied in challenge, sliding into the farthest seat beside Jordan.

Leaning against the door and the car, Six released a soft laugh. Then he pressed himself into the empty cushions across from us, shutting the three of us inside.

If he was jealous or hurt by Jordan and I keeping to ourselves, he didn’t let it show. He adjusted his cufflinks, straightened his jacket and pants as he got comfortable.

“If you would be so kind as to knock,” he motioned to the partition between the driver and the rest of the car, “we will be on our way.”

Part of me was too nervous to look directly at the glass, afraid that an everyday human driver wasn’t behind the wheel, but some shadow being Six could manipulate at will.
